Mrs. Betty Marie West Gentry, age 83 of Sparta, passed away at 2:50am on Sunday, November 1, 2026 in the emergency room of St. Thomas Highlands Hospital.

Betty was born April 25, 1943 in Sparta, Tennessee to the late Jack and Ida Emerton West. She was a retired shirt factory worker. She loved to cook, garden and take care of her goats and horses. Above all else she loved being Granny Bird for her family.

In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband Louis Gentry who died November 29, 2013; grandsons Matthew White and Silas Carpenter; sisters, Suzie Spears, Linda Frazier and Brenda Pullum; brothers, Herman, J.L, and Doc West.

Surviving family members include her two daughters, Tammy O’Conner and partner Donnie Flatt, Maggie “Rootie” White

Grandchildren: Danny O’Conner, Tyler Stockton, Kade White, Bayli White, Cody Carpenter and Jarret Carpenter

The family will receive friends from 4-7:00pm Tuesday at Hunter Funeral Home with a private funeral to follow in Gentry Family Cemetery at a later date.
