Ray William Barnes, age 86, of Howell, Michigan, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2025.

He was born on January 2, 1939, in Morgan County, Ohio, to the late Robert and Alberta Barnes. Raised in Ypsilanti, Ray began working for General Motors at the age of 21. He dedicated many years to the company before retiring in 1990. It was at General Motors where Ray met the love of his life, Sandy, and the two were united in marriage on January 2, 1987, in Toledo, Ohio. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and family.

Ray will be remembered for his love of fishing—especially what he fondly called "crappie fishing" down south. He also enjoyed tending to his garden, riding tractors, and spending time in his workshop, where he built many beautiful pieces, including pine bluebird houses. His family will always smile remembering how happy he seemed with dirt on his hands from the garden or while cruising around on his tractor like it was his favorite toy. In his quieter moments, Ray could often be found watching his favorite old westerns, particularly those starring John Wayne, whose lines he knew by heart.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sandy; his children Lois (John) Carlson, Marty (Kim) Price, Brian (Bridgette) Price, Robert Barnes, and Cynthia Barnes ; 16 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, with another on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Earl; his granddaughter, Mariah Cronenvhet; and his grandson, Johnny Carlson.

Graveside services will be conducted 12:30pm Saturday, August 30, 2025 at Jericho Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 11:00am until departure for the cemetery at noon at Hunter Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Residential Hospice.
